We have some impressive employees in our ranks: from basketball players to marathon runners, from gamers to authors. The Employee Spotlight series aims to highlight the talented individuals who work here.
For this month’s Employee Spotlight, we’re featuring Chris Penfold, Outsource IT Manager here at Cybrid.
What do you do at Cybrid?
I primarily look after the IT for one of our largest customers. I manage a small team of engineers ensuring that we prioritise our work accordingly and achieve any targets that have been set out and that excellent service delivery is achieved.
What are your credentials/past experience for working in your position?
In the previous 4 years have managed IT teams of varying sizes with a focus on service delivery. Previous to that I have been an IT engineer working on a service desk and delivering projects. In the last 9 years, I’ve worked with businesses big and small from self-employed accountants to large law firms and power stations – it’s been hugely rewarding.
What’s the best thing about your job?
People. It’s a cliché but I enjoy working with a bright team of engineers and then helping them progress in their IT careers. I enjoy meeting the people at our customers who are from all sorts of backgrounds and providing them with a great IT service. Most people think IT is just about technology but it’s actually about people and understanding their needs and empathising with them when they have a problem.
What’s been your proudest moment at Cybrid?
I’ve only been here a month, but it’s been amazing to join a growing, energetic company and starting to make difference.
What’s it like working at Cybrid during the current pandemic? Has the way you work changed at all?
I think IT itself has changed for all businesses and it’s more important than ever that IT is at a high standard as we adapt to more people working from home. It adds new challenges and new opportunities for improvement. For us at Cybrid though we are staying focussed and adapting to those changes.
Before working at Cybrid, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
Not sure if this counts but I did some volunteer work in Australia which involved working in the sub-tropical forests. My day would regularly involve uprooting non-indigenous plant life and avoiding deadly insects and snakes. Quite difficult for someone who is a confessed arachnophobe. Before that, though I worked in Insurance which is not really all that interesting!
What’s something new you’ve learned in the past week?
No matter how tough the recent lockdown measures get people will make every effort to make the most of the Christmas period.
What are your top three books/podcasts?
I’m a big fan of medieval history and recently ‘The Templars’ by Dan Jones. As for podcasts I’m interested in True crime and regularly listen to ‘Casefile’. When I’m after something a little lighter then my inner Board Game geek comes out and listen to ‘Shut up and Sit Down’.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
I enjoy running and constantly challenging my physical fitness. It keeps me fit enough to run around after my kids. I also enjoy cooking, playing board games and spending time with my wife and two kids.
